Bali, Indonesia: Seminyak area

Seminyak beach

Just started poring over photos from 2+ amazing weeks in Bali (March/April of this year. I am still fantasizing about going back!) Indonesia was by far a highlight of my entire trip - for the food, the friendly culture, the affordability, the natural beauty and of course the surfing! However, I was not a huge fan of the Kuta area, which this post covers.

The first few days were spent with 6 old friends from Colorado. Had a great time with them although the heat combined with jetlag were a bit of a struggle!

A few impressions:

The Island Hotel (Legian) - nice pool/rooms, delicious breakfast, and far enough away from Kuta, walking distance to beach
Kuta - like Vegas, only more Australians, drugs and sketchy characters mixed with loud music, chaotic street crowds, and overpriced retail stores, I strongly disliked this area
Kuta area beaches - paddled through TONS of trash floating in the water while surfing! gross - though the beaches themselves were okay
Seminyak - better (less sketchy) nightlife than Kuta

If you're flying into Bali, I'd highly recommend you stay in a place like Canggu - a refreshing escape from the tourism and madness of Kuta that's just a short trip down the road. (See future posts...) Although -thanks to the company of a fabulous group of friends- I had a great time in the Seminyak area!

Surf time!

Coromandel Coast, New Zealand

Cathedral Cove, New Zealand
My last day in New Zealand, back in March: Damian took the day off work and we explored the northern coast, looping from Morrinsville to Thames, Whitianga and back along the Coromandel coast. Absolutely spectactular views from every point of this windy road. We stopped for lunch and later to hike down to Cathedral Cove - which was touristy but still worth it. Scroll down to see a few unedited pics from the drive.

10 days is definitely not enough time in New Zealand. Thanks a MILLION Damian Brown for showing me such a great time! I'll be back soon :)
