Summer of SUP: Delong Lake, Alaska

Technically, "Fall of SUP" now...
My friend Derek and I headed out to Delong lake in Anchorage for a quick after work SUP a few weeks ago. We ran into a friend's dad who happened to be out canoeing, who invited us to paddle over to his house for a beer. An hour later... came back to ice-covered paddleboards and a beautiful sunset!

Lazy Mountain / Matanuska Peak

This trail run has been on my bucket list for awhile, and we did it the 3rd weekend in September (2014) and lucked out with amazing fall colors. We mirrored the Matanuska Peak Challenge race course, which goes up and down Lazy Mountain, up and down Matanuska Peak, and then up and down Lazy again back to the parking lot. However, instead of going all the way up (not so) Lazy Mountain a second time, we took a trail to the valley floor (McRoberts Creek trail) and followed the Morgan Horse Trail from there another two miles back to the car.

No bear encounters but we did see some moose and had about an hour of sideways snow toward the end of the ascent. Obviously important to be sure to bring lots of food, water, and clothes on this one- the temperature dropped pretty notably for the last few hours of the ascent. The summit itself was fairly clouded over but sitting at 6,119 feet, we still had an incredible view at the end.  This one's best for avid mountain runners/hikers - not a technical climb but pretty intense ascending, slow going with boulder scrambles at the top of Matanuska, and a huge beating on the quads (mine are still recovering!) Totally worth it- a great trail running challenge!

Total RT: 16 miles
Elevation gain: ~8,000 feet (true race course is closer to 9,000)
Elevation loss: ~8,000 feet (true race course is closer to 9,000)
Our time: 6 hours with lots of photo breaks :)

Fall SUP: Edmonds Lake, Alaska

I almost don't want to write about this one, because it's such a sweet little find... Edmonds Lake is right next to Mirror Lake, north of Anchorage. It's relatively small, boasting only a few docks/homes, and me and Jennah had it to ourselves. What a blissful, serene place for a fall morning SUP!

Alaska Hiking: The Ramp via Hidden Lake

Trail run loop from Glen Alps trailhead - powerline pass - cross 2nd bridge - stay left and work your way up ridgeline to Hidden Lake - Traverse ridges with spectacular views all the way to the Ramp summit. From the Ramp, you could easily bag the Wedge (across Ship Lake Pass heading back toward powerline) in the same day (we ran out of time, though). We ran back down the Ship Lake Pass side and back out via powerline. Still in honeymoon phase with Alaska, and as usual, I remain in complete awe of the adventures you can have right out the back door up here! This one is not to be missed!

The Ramp: elevation 5,240 feet
Loop distance: about 11 miles
