Alaska Hiking: Harding Icefield Trail

Hands down one of my all time favorite trails in Alaska, this hike starts at the end of Exit Glacier road. The trail quickly splits (right) from the main trail and you head up lots of initial switchbacks before paralleling Exit Glacier, with sweeping views in all directions. Terrain varies from dense forest to alpine meadows and a snow-covered finish (year-round). Toward the end, the trail is marked by orange flags in the snow, and you can continue on past the emergency shelter hut to where the trail ends as the glacier wraps around to the right.  One time I saw 7 different black bears on this hike- so make lots of noise and bring your bear spray!

Distance: 8-9 miles RT depending on how far you go past the emergency hut
Elevation gain: 3,336 feet
My time: ~2.5 hours (running)
